Getting to Four Corners Monument: distances and honest drive times
The table, and where the numbers came from
I am disclosing the method because nobody else’s numbers here have one. There is no official table to quote, so these are routed on OpenStreetMap data with OSRM, free-flow: no stops, no construction, no weather, and none of the reduced speeds that are routine on US-160, US-163 and US-491. Use the right-hand column, not the middle one.

Everything below 100 miles on that list is a detour. Everything above 300 is a holiday that happens to pass nearby, and treating a 30-to-60-minute stop as the reason for it is how people end up disappointed. The argument both ways is on is it worth it.
Two traps in those numbers
“Grand Canyon” means the South Rim. Unqualified, in search and in conversation, it nearly always does, and that is the 230-mile line: four and a half to five and a half hours. The North Rim looks closer on a map and is not — 302 road miles, six to seven hours, and closed from mid-October to mid-May. If someone quotes you a Grand Canyon drive time without saying which rim, you do not know what you have been told.
Mesa Verde is not one hour from Cortez, and also it is. The National Park Service describes the park as a one-hour drive from Cortez, which reads as nonsense when you see that the entrance is about 10 miles out of town. NPS means reaching the mesa-top cliff dwellings, which is most of an hour beyond the entrance station on a slow climbing road. So from the monument: 49 miles and an hour to an hour and twenty to the entrance, then add roughly 45 minutes to get where the cliff dwellings are. Budget the whole thing or you will be watching the clock on a tour you paid for.
From Cortez and Durango, which is how most people actually arrive
Cortez is 39 miles, three quarters of an hour to an hour, and it is where I live, so this is the version I know cold: out and back inside two hours plus however long you stand on the disc. Durango is 85 miles and an hour and a half to two hours each way — a half-day round trip from a town most visitors are using as a base anyway. Both are on where to stay, along with how little there is nearer than that.
The obvious pairing from either is Mesa Verde: 49 miles from the marker, and the two fit in one day if you start early and accept that the monument is the short half of it.
From Monument Valley, Moab and the Utah side
Monument Valley is 97 miles and two to two and a half hours, which surprises people who have looked at a map and seen the two sitting in the same empty quarter of the Southwest. It is the single most common combination people ask me about, and it works, but it is most of a driving day with two paid tribal gates in it. Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park charges its own fee — Navajo Parks lists US$10.00 per person, all ages, valid 8 hours — and the National Park Pass is not accepted there either.
Moab is 145 miles, three to three and three quarters hours. That is a genuine day’s drive with Arches and Canyonlands at the far end of it, and the monument is a stop along the way rather than a destination from there.
From Denver, Las Vegas, Phoenix and Albuquerque
Denver is 418 miles and eight and a half to ten hours. Las Vegas is 448 and the same again. Phoenix is 370, seven to eight. Albuquerque is 244, four and three quarters to five and a half, and Flagstaff 227, four and a half to five and a half.
I will say the unhelpful thing plainly, because the alternative is pretending. A stop that takes 30 to 60 minutes does not justify a seventeen-hour round trip from Denver or Las Vegas on its own. From those cities the monument is something you route through on a Southwest loop, not something you drive to. From Albuquerque or Flagstaff it is a long day but a defensible one if the drive itself is part of what you came for.
The roads, and the hour you can lose on them
US-160, US-163 and US-491 carry most of this traffic and the free-flow speeds a router assumes are not the speeds you will average on them. That is the entire reason the realistic column exists. Add the fact that the parking areas at the monument turn to mud and flood after rain — the president’s office said so in 2023 — and a monsoon afternoon is not the time to be shaving margins.
The other hour is the clock, not the road. Drive up from Phoenix or Flagstaff in summer and you cross into a place that keeps Daylight Saving Time while the state you started in does not. Your phone may not notice. The gate will. That is opening hours and the time-zone trap, and it is the single most common way a well-planned drive ends at a locked barrier.
